Will Power To Drive in Indy 8 Hour at IMS in Sports Car Debut
3 HOURS AGO
An offseason of new experiences continues for two-time INDYCAR SERIES champion Will Power as he will make his sports car debut driving in the Indianapolis 8 Hour presented by AWS on Oct. 16-18 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Power will join fellow Australians Kenny Habul and Chaz Mostert in the 75 Expresss Mercedes-AMG in the Intercontinental GT Challenge event for GT3 sports cars at IMS. The car will compete in the Pro class in the eight-hour race Saturday, Oct. 18.
A debut in sports cars comes about six weeks after Power was named to drive the No. 26 Honda for Andretti Global in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES starting next season after 16 full seasons with Team Penske that included series titles in 2014 and 2022 and winning the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge in 2018. He is the all-time leader in series poles with 71 and is fourth on the all-time win list with 45.
Few drivers have been as successful on the IMS road course as Power, who has won five NTT INDYCAR SERIES races on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course during his legendary career.
Now he makes a belated GT3 debut for 75 Express – the same team, under a different name – with which he was due to drive for in the 2023 Rolex 24 At Daytona before his wife’s serious illness forced him to step away.
This will be the second consecutive year an INDYCAR SERIES champion has competed in the Indy 8 Hour. Four-time title winner Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing drove for Lone Star’s Pro class Mercedes-AMG effort last year.
Tickets and more information for the Indy 8 Hour can be found here.
Power isn't the only INDYCAR SERIES legend racing in sports cars this month.
Six-time series champion Scott Dixon is racing in the Petit Le Mans this Saturday at Road Atlanta, sharing the No. 60 Acura Meyer Shank Racing w/ Curb-Agajanian Acura ARX-06 in the GTP class with fellow INDYCAR SERIES veterans Tom Blomqvist and Colin Braun. The 10-hour race is the season finale for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Four-time series champion Sebastien Bourdais is racing in the LMP2 class at Road Atlanta, joining John Farano and Sebastian Alvarez in the No. 8 Tower Motorsports ORECA LMP2 07.
