Using INDYCAR’s advanced statistics and data, we’ve developed a weighted formula to rate the NTT IndyCar Series drivers after each race this season. Welcome to the Power Rankings – but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Will Power is always included.

How does it work? We look beyond the results of the event, also factoring in qualifying results, on-track passes, on-track position passes and average running position throughout the race to come up with each driver’s unique rating.

The rankings are based on the four most recent races. The most recent race (Iowa 300) is weighted the most in the rating and the oldest race (DXC Technology 600) the least.

So, following Iowa and heading to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, here’s a look at the top NTT IndyCar Series drivers:

There’s a 'New' No. 1:

Josef Newgarden – He leads the point standings, and for the first time since early June, Josef Newgarden is back atop the Power Ratings. The Team Penske driver has a pair wins in the last four races and his dominating drive at Iowa vaults him past both previous No. 1 Alexander Rossi and No. 2 Simon Pagenaud.

On the Rise

James Hinchcliffe – The Mayor finally scored a podium and it helps him earn another title this week – Highest Riser in the rankings. Hinchcliffe has top-seven finishes in his last three races and at fourth in the rankings only trails the three most-recent race winners – Newgarden, Pagenaud and Rossi – in consistency.

Looking to Bounce Back

Ryan Hunter-Reay – The Power Ratings are a fickle beast and this week Andretti Autosport sees Hunter-Reay tumble out of the ratings for the first time since our first poll. RHR will likely be happy to see this stretch of three in a row end this week. It hasn’t been good for him.

The Top 10

1. Newgarden (Last Rating: 3) – See above.
2. Simon Pagenaud (Last Rating: 2) – The Iowa pole sitter wasn’t a factor in the race, but he still finished fourth and stays in NTT IndyCar Series Championship contention.
3. Alexander Rossi (Last Rating: 1) – Rossi admits that Iowa isn’t his best track. To come home sixth means he didn’t lose too much ground to his rivals.
4. James Hinchcliffe (Last Rating: 8) – See above.
5. Scott Dixon (Last Rating: 4) – Second for the second week in a row. Like an alligator, if you keep letting him hang around, Dixon will eventually come around and bite you.
6. Graham Rahal (Last Rating: 5) – Rahal salvages another top-10 finish despite an issue with his car. He heads home to Mid-Ohio with a lot of confidence.
7. Santino Ferrucci (Last Rating: 9) – Newgarden, Pagenaud and Rossi have scored the most points on ovals this season. Do you know who is fourth? Santino Ferrucci.
8. Sebastien Bourdais (Last Rating: Unranked) – Driving to the front after starting in the back isn’t something Bourdais and Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan want to make a habit of. If the team can fix the woes in qualifying this weekend, watch out.
9. Spencer Pigot (Last Rating: Unranked) – If INDYCAR scheduled more races at Iowa, Spencer Pigot wouldn’t complain. He’s finished in the top five there in his two starts.
10. Will Power (Last Rating: Unranked) – Would have finished higher, if not for another unforced error – a penalty that ruined his race.
