Spencer Pigot

Spencer Pigot expects this to be his year. And why shouldn’t he?

The 20-year-old driver in the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires is off to a strong start with Juncos Racing.

Pigot, a native of Orlando, Fla., who recently moved to Indianapolis, is fresh off a weekend sweep of the two races at St. Petersburg.

“We’re definitely expecting as a team to be fighting for wins and a championship. We came off a really strong Winterfest,” Pigot said. “We know we have the pace and we know we can win races. We expect to be doing that regularly.”

Saying the Winterfest series of races at NOLA Motorsports Park and Barber Motorsports Park in February was strong might be an understatement. Pigot, in his second year in Pro Mazda and his fourth in the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system, won the first of two races by 11.2 seconds over Shelby Blackstock. After finishing second in the next race, Pigot took the first race at Barber Motorsports Park by 8 seconds over Scott Hargrove.

“Sometimes when you’re so far out it’s easy to make mistakes because you get a little complacent,” Pigot said.  “I just tried to keep my head down and concentrate on hitting my marks and not making any mistakes. Sometimes it can be easy once you’re so far out to lose your focus a little bit. I just kept thinking about the next corner and the next lap.”

He picked up where he left off at St. Petersburg. He started from the pole in both races and led from flag to flag on each occasion to claim the maximum points haul in the Allied Building Products Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

“I couldn't be happier with how the first weekend of the season went,” Pigot said. “We worked really hard as a team to prepare for St. Pete and it paid off. To top every session and win both races is a great start for me.”
