Josh Pierson

Josh Pierson, who just completed his rookie season in INDY NXT by Firestone, will test a Toyota GR010 Hybrid Hypercar prototype sports car Nov. 5 at the Bahrain International Circuit.

Pierson, 17, is one of three drivers nominated by organizers of the FIA World Endurance Championship for the end-of-season rookie test. Pierson, Nicolas Varrone of Argentina and Antoine Doquin of France each will get at least 30 laps of testing at Bahrain.

Toyota won the 2021 and 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans with the exotic GR010 prototype, which features a 3.5-liter, turbocharged V6 engine powering the rear wheels and a 200-kilowatt electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery driving the front wheels.

“I’m really excited to get my first experience in a Hypercar, especially with a team like Toyota that is experienced and passionate about the sport,” Pierson said. “I’m extremely honored and grateful to have been selected for this, and I’m really looking forward to getting behind the wheel.”

Oregon native Pierson split time this season between racing in INDY NXT by Firestone with HMD Motorsports and in WEC with United Autosports in the LMP2 class. He was the youngest 24 Hours of Le Mans starter in 2022 at age 16, and he has won two WEC races in LMP2.

Ed Carpenter Racing named Pierson as an official development driver in late 2022, with plans for an NTT INDYCAR SERIES seat with the team starting in 2025. Pierson competed in nine of the 14 INDY NXT by Firestone races this season, with a best finish of sixth at Iowa Speedway.
