Undeterred by the arctic conditions engulfing much of the United States, the Mazda Road to Indy storms into Barber Motorsports Park this week for the aptly-named Cooper Tires Winterfest.

Three races for both the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda are scheduled for Feb. 25-26 on the 2.38-mile, 17-turn road course. Round 1 of the Winterfest was conducted last week at NOLA Motorsports Park.

What do teams hope to gain from Round 2?

“Momentum,” said USF2000 team owner Augie Pabst.

Pabst Racing’s Jake Eidson departed New Orleans with two wins in three races. In Birmingham, Ala., he might battle the elements as much as the competition.

“We are expecting extremely cold temps and potential precipitation as well, so everyone will have to deal with that. Hopefully, the snow stays in Wisconsin this week,” added Pabst.

Team Pelfrey likewise dominated the first leg of the Pro Mazda Winterfest with Jack Aitken winning two of three races. He heads into Round 2 tied in points with Andretti Autosport’s Weiron Tan, who claimed three podium finishes, including a victory in race two.

“It was actually a really tough few races, as we had to fight really hard to stay ahead of Weiron for the win,” Aitken said. “Although we probably lacked the final tenth or two on pace compared to Andretti, we've come out equal on points and with plenty of momentum heading into Barber, so I'm already looking forward to the last three races.”

The undulating Barber course presents different challenges to teams and drivers than the flat 2.74-mile, 13-turn NOLA Motorsports Park course.

Because of the weather forecast, the scheduled Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Open Test has been rescheduled for March 3. The season-opening races for all three series on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., are March 28-29.
