The cost for universal aero kits to be used by all competitors in the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series season has been substantially reduced based on figures confirmed today by INDYCAR.

Each full-season entry will receive two universal aero kits – produced by Dallara Automobili and made in Indiana – at no cost. The normal cost of a complete kit is $90,000, so each entry is saving $180,000. The cost of a complete aero kit is locked in through the 2020 season, and each team has been provided a plan to convert a Dallara IR-12 chassis to the specifications.

Chevrolet, Honda and a grant from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation as part of the state’s drive to support motorsports industry initiatives have helped make this equipment transition more economically attractive. Indiana-based teams will realize additional savings.

“When INDYCAR undertook the process of creating the universal kit that makes our cars sleeker, safer and racier, we also worked hard to make sure it would be cost effective to our teams,” said Jay Frye, INDYCAR president of competition and operations.

Teams are expected to receive their allotment of universal kits this month, allowing them time before the holidays to convert their Dallara IR-12 chassis and be ready for team testing that is permitted beginning Jan. 8. The 2018 season begins with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 11.
